Co-Creation In Global High-Tech
Co-Creation In Global High-TechCo-Creation In Global High-TechIn previous posts I have analyzed predictions from two years ago that were presented at the World Innovation Forum and World Business Forum in 2009.In my last post I introduced C.K. Prahalads glaubenszeugnis on the importance of co-creation in developing countries. This theory has a significant impact on job seekers looking for international high-tech job opportunities at large corporations. One of the key elements of Prahalads theory is that new inventions must be co-created with the audience for which they are intended. This audience may include the poorer residents in developing countries. When it comes to new high-tech gadgets and infrastructures, corporations must work closely with consumers to ensure that new products truly meet their needs. The market opportunities available in developing countries cannot be addressed by corporations if all of their intrapreneurs are deeply entrenched within their own cultures in a si ngle geographic location. What is required instead is a local intrapreneur who can take the initiative to engage with ansicht customers directly and participate in innovation by co-creation.For innovation by co-creation to happen, corporations need to identify, train, and empower a set of global intrapreneurs who support each others efforts. Often times these corporations will train them using successful formulas (such as the seven habits of highly effective intrapreneurs). When employees have developed the skills and been given the autonomy to innovate in their own locale, they can engage local consumers and enter into the process of co-creation.Engagement with local consumers and customers fosters ideas, and these ideas will lead to product proposals. In the book Innovate With Global Influence, I describe multiple examples of how globally distributed employees were able to generate their own ideas and deliver them within a large corporation. What does this have to do with high-tech job seekers in developed countries (like the United States)? In the definition of reverse innovation, the last and final stage results in high-tech products that are exported back into more developed countries. This is extremely hard to do, because different countries have different regulations when it comes to the sustainability of high-tech products and the governance of high-tech information. Therefore it is imperative that local intrapreneurs interact with their global counterparts. Why? Because intrapreneurs need to collaborate with each other on the complex issues of global sustainability, and the international governance of information. The need for high-tech employees to participate in globally distributed product development is an exciting option for a career in high-tech innovation. My next post will discuss how job seekers can best leverage this opportunity.Steve http//stevetodd.typepad.com Twitter SteveTodd EMC Intrapreneur

Why Work-Life Balance Sucks for Most Women
Why Work-Life Balance Sucks for Most WomenWhy Work-Life Balance Sucks for Most WomenTired of the hearing the term work-life balance? Many women are. The term welches coined to identify the conflicting demands women face. It was probably invented by women or a woman who wanted to get a message out we canbedrngnis do it all. In that regard, the term is somewhat sexist because it was not targeted at, or identified with men. When was the last time you heard a man say he needed a better balance in his life to take the kids to the park? And, why dont men seek mora balance in their lives? If they were to pitch in more with chores and child-rearing, women might not be stretched so thin. The truth is, we live in a changing society where men, in fact, helping out than they did fifty years ago. There are more single dads today than even twenty years ago (single dads not due to being widowed.) Men are slowly becoming more openly nurturing and supportive of wives who want to go back to school. Bu t this is done quietly, household by household - society at large has yet to accept that men are contributing more. Still, women continue to struggle with what is expected of them - or what they think is expected of them. Women strive to be super wives, super moms, and career women. All the while, they stress about getting older, gaining weight, and competing with younger women in the workforce. The Term Work-Life Balance Does Not Identify What Many Women Need The phrase work-life balance conjures up an image of a scale (something women are often at war with anyhow) with work on one side and family and/or other personal relationships on the other. In the middle is the woman with both arms extended trying to balance everything. The woman represents the stabilizer caught in the middle being divided her life into two parts - where she feels she should be and where society says she should be. But a woman is a whole being and the focus should be on her as a whole being and not on jus t two (important) aspects of her life. The this or that definition of work-life seeks to define women as servants in two entirely separate roles workers or caretakers. Women perform these (and many other) roles but they should not be made to represent the embodiment of these roles. Work-life balance has been traktament to women as being the key to happiness by suggesting all we need to do is to simply find a way to better fill our roles without going crazy. The bottom line message being (unfairly) sold to women is that if we would only prioritize our work lives better we would have more time to spend with friends, family, and on ourselves. The trouble is, accomplishing more personal time requires a significant amount of work and the term balance becomes moot. Very few people can or would want to spend half their time working and half their time not working. There are plenty of women who do not have a job outside the home that need more balance in their lives. And, what about the car eer women who love their work so that trying to add more time (balance) baking cookies at home would be to their detriment? The very term work-life balance implies that there is a balance to be had in the first place (there is not) and if we do not have it something is wrong with us. Work-life balance is just one more task for women to try and find time to tend to one more thing on our long to do list to fail and feel bad about not accomplishing in a day. To think we can achieve better work life balance by simply being more prioritized, better organized, or by trying harder, is foolishness at best.

What Police Officers Cary on Their Duty Belts
What Police Officers Cary on Their Duty BeltsWhat Police Officers Cary on Their Duty BeltsThough theyre not exactly like Batman, one of the first things that come to mind when people think of a versicherungspolice officer is probably the duty belt. People who are interested in criminal justice careers often spend a lot of time wondering and asking about the tools on an officers belt. Duty Belt an Important Tool of the Trade As the primary means of carrying equipment, the importance of the duty belt has always been understood, even as police evolved from lowly members of the night watch carrying muskets and swords to a professional police force with gadgets galore. In order to perform their jobs effectively and keep themselves and others tresor, law enforcement officers carry a host of interesting tools. Depending on how its equipped, the duty belt can add another 10 pounds to a uniformed officers weight. Some of the most common questions officers get asked are about the duty belt . Even officers from other agencies often talk to each other about the kind of equipment they carry. For those of you who are curious about what tools police officers use, lets take a look at what exactly is on a police officers utility belt. Magazine Pouch As you look at a law enforcement officer from the front, the first thing youll probably notice is the magazine pouch. The magazine pouch consists of two, and sometimes three, separate containers to hold extra magazines for the officers firearm. Magazines, often called clips by the general public, contain extra rounds for the firearm and are used to feed live rounds into a semiautomatic weapon. Because most officers now carry automatic pistols, the magazine pouch has become a staple of the police utility belt. Flashlights Flashlights have long been associated with police officers. These are not your typical torches you might find in the kitchen junk drawer, though. Instead, officers carry long and heavy lights with halogen bulbs or LEDs, such as Maglites. The halogen lights are so powerful and so hot that they have been known to burn small holes in car seats and even uniforms. The Maglite is usually rechargeable and rests in a charger in the patrol car until the officer feels she may need it. When she gets out of the car, especially at night, shell slip it in a flashlight ring that hangs on the belt. Many officersnow carry a second flashlight that is smaller and more tactical. This light is also especially bright and usually has an LED bulb. The tactical flashlight rests in a pouch on the officers belt. It is especially useful for vehicle searches and for low and no-light shooting situations. Electronic Control Device The electronic control device, or ECD, has been a popular subject in the news for quite a while. Perhaps the best-known devices are made by Taser International. The term Taser has come to describe all varieties of ECDs, though the word properly refers to specific devices made by the Taser company. ECDs have been the topic of a great deal of controversy due to their apparent association with in-custody deaths of prisoners. Its important to notenzeichen that the correlation is not necessarily a causation, though, and Taser International and other ECD manufacturers rigorously defend the use of their product. Law enforcement agencies collect and retain extensive data on the use of ECDs. The ECD serves as a deterrent as much as a weapon in many situations, merely showing a resistant subject an ECD is has been shown to gain compliance. When deployed, the ECD works using the concept of neuromuscular incapacitation. Essentially, the electronic impulses from the ECD interrupt the electronic signals from the brain to the muscles, causing the subject to be temporarily incapacitated. Baton Often called a nightstick by people outside of the industry, the police baton comes in many forms and serves just as many purposes. True, officers may necessarily use batons to stri ke unruly subjects who are resisting arrest. Believe it or not, though, they serve more purposes than that of a simple club. Using special hold techniques, police batons can be used to help restrain a subject until handcuffs can be applied. They are also very effective at blocking blows and strikes and helping officers to avoid injury. Handcuffs What would a police officer be without handcuffs? The hallmark of the law enforcement profession, handcuffs have become a symbol of a police officers authority to make arrests. These seemingly simple tools are more complicated than they appear, and officers undergo extensive training at the academy in their use. Effective and efficient handcuffing techniques can often make the difference in keeping both the officer and the arrested subject safe from injury. Firearm In the United Kingdom, where the concept of modern policing as we now know it began, law enforcement officers do not regularly carry firearms. When the first police office rs began to walk the streets of London in the mid-1800s, there was a concern that law enforcement officers would be too similar to an occupying army if they were armed. This aversion carries on today, with only officers in special units and special assignments carrying guns. By contrast, the pistol has been a part of American policing almost since the inception of a police force. Nearly every sworn officer in the United States carries at least one firearm, and quite often they may also carry a backup weapon hidden on their body. Though there are a few officers who still carry revolvers, most carry semiautomatic pistols. Popular manufacturers are Glock, Smith Wesson, Beretta, and Sig Sauer. Currently, most departments carry a .40 caliber pistol, though there is a movement toward the larger .45 caliber round. Pepper Spray Popularly known as Mace, pepper spray actually comes in many forms and varieties. Some sprays have traces of tear gas, while others are simply a high concentrat ion of capsaicin, the oil found in chili peppers that makethem hot. Most police departments have fairly strict policies on the use of pepper spray. Officers are usually required to be exposed to the spray to experience their effects. This helps them be more aware and sympathetic to people they may be inclined to use it on, and it also helps them be prepared in the event they deploy it and become exposed accidentally in the field. Except for a very small segment of the population who may have an allergy, pepper spray is completely harmless. If only the capsaicin is used, the substance is completely natural. Its effectiveness comes from the extreme heat, up to 2 million Scoville units, which causes intense pain but does no damage. Police Equipment Doesnt Make the Officer Though the duty belt has become a staple of a police uniform, its important to remember that the equipment doesnt make the officer. Rather, proper training and use of the equipment, along with the sound applicatio n of local, state, and federal statutes and of law enforcement principles and techniques make a good police officer a great one. The law enforcement toys and police gadgets may be fun and interesting, but they are first and foremost tools. Anyone interested in criminal justice careers must always keep in mind the commitment to protecting people and safeguarding rights. The tools on an officers duty belt are just one of the means through which law enforcement professionals can achieve their goal of voluntary compliance with the law.

Email Secrets of Successful Professionals
Email Secrets of Successful Professionals Email Secrets of Successful Professionals Never have an email go unanswered again. Get your emails read with these simple rules. Itâs a constant battle to keep up with the deluge of emails inundating my inbox on a regular basis. Between my online publications, social media alerts, and the god-forsaken spam email, itâs a wonder Iâm ever able to find and respond to the emails that matter most.Sound familiar?Iâm not surprised. According to Outlook, 144.8 billion â" thatâs billion with a b â" are sent every day worldwide. Sadly, a report by McKinsey Global Institute and International Data Corp found that workers only consider a mere 14 percent of the emails in their inbox to be important. If you want to succeed in business, you need to effectively communicate with your colleagues and professional contacts via email. Here are eight rules to help you do just that.People often get so preoccupied with crafting their message that they forget to include a subject line. Donât make this mistake. Emails with blank subject li nes are more likely to go unnoticed in a personâs inbox. Do yourself a favor and write the subject line first so you know itâs taken care of.While your average email inbox reveals 60 charactersâ worth of the subject line, a mobile phone only displays around 25-30 characters. Keep this in mind when crafting your subject lines. They should be short, to the point, and specific so the recipient can properly prioritize his or her inbox without opening the email.Resist the urge to add filler words or other vague terms such as âThanks,â âHi,â and so forth to the subject line â" save those for the body of the email. Get right to the point in eight words or less, and put the most important ones at the beginning of your subject line.Avoid sending emails with dense blocks of text â" nobody wants to scroll through long paragraphs, especially if theyâre accessing your email from their smartphone. Also, the longer your email, the longer you will likely wait for a response.Bullet s are a great way to sum up your points in a clear, concise manner. If thereâs a call-to-action or deadline associated with your email, call attention to this by either bolding and/or highlighting the sentence. I recommend including the deadline in your subject line. For instance:âSarah: Need specs for NYC McFadden project â" pls reply by EOD 9/12âA disadvantage of communicating via email is that the tone of your message is often lost in translation. In fact, a survey by Sendmail found that 64 percent of professionals sent and/or received email that unintentionally caused anger or resentment in the workplace. Donât leave your message up to interpretation. Save the humor for face-to-face conversations. No one likes to be yelled at, especially over email. Unfortunately, thatâs exactly how people will interpret your email response in all caps. DONâT DO THIS. ITâS NOT POLITE.Remember the boy who cried wolf? If you flag every email as a high priority, pretty soon your rec ipients will learn to ignore them. Save this tag for the truly high-priority items. If your team has different definitions as to what qualifies as an urgent email, bring it up in your next meeting so everyoneâs on the same page.Do you have other email tips? Share them in the comments below.

4 things to do when interviewing for a job that feels out of your league
4 things to do when interviewing for a job that feels out of your league 4 things to do when interviewing for a job that feels out of your league Itâs been reported that compared to men, women donât always go out on a limb by applying for positions even though they donât meet all the requirements as frequently, but you donât have to let that stop you. Here are some job interview tips for how to handle an interview for a position that feels out of your league.1. Talk about the right skillsAndrea Sobel, a headhunter and hiring manager at Parsons, told Business Insider about what to focus on during the interview - and what to steer clear of:âYou want to make sure youâre talking about the topics that they want to hear. If you have five skills in your current job, but the company youâre interviewing for is only focusing on three of those skills, donât waste too much of your time discussing the other two.â2. Make sure you know a lot about the fieldSara McCord, an editor and freelance writer, suggests in The Muse that you should contact a connection who has been successful in the industry your interviewing for t o learn more about it, and about the power of doing your homework beforehand:âIn a reach interview, you can compensate for being lighter on skills or experience by seeming totally immersed in the company and industry. For example, even if youâve never used the exact software the company uses to track its emails, youâll seem capable if youâve heard of it, and - if along with discussing a recent newsletter (which any candidate could do) - you also discuss how it reflects the shifts in communication recently advocated by a major thought leader in the sector. A little extra research can make all the difference in looking clued in and ready to go, rather than out of your league.â3. Keep your personality in checkAlison Green, author of the Ask a Manager blog, writes in U.S. News World Report that you should âstrike the right balance between confidence and humilityâ when interview time comes:âThis is a tricky one. On one hand, if youâre not confident that you can do t he work, your interviewer wonât be either. But on the other hand, you donât want to come across as inappropriately cocky or naive about your own experience level and what it will take to do the job well. You need to find a balance somewhere in the middle â" confident but with a realistic understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses.â4. Show how open-minded you areInterview expert Barry Drexler told CNBC about three measures that can be taken in an interview where the job is a reach, the last of which is to show how much youâre open to learning something new. For instance, if youâve never managed before, but are asked if you have, you can convey something along the lines of:âI donât have managerial experience, but I was allowed to take the lead on various projects where I delegated tasks to other co-workers and received specified results. If I could obtain these specified results then Iâm sure I can effectively manage a team here and am willing to learn from t hose above me.â

How clutter causes stress and anxiety (and what you can do about it)
How clutter causes stress and anxiety (and what you can do about it) How clutter causes stress and anxiety (and what you can do about it) Unanswered emails, work papers scattered across your desk, dozens of open tabs on your internet browser, unused clothes and items that collect dust- these are examples of the clutter in your life that cause stress and anxiety. The harder you try to stop new clutter coming in- the more stressed, anxious and overwhelmed you feel.Itâs a vicious cycle that could be holding you back from living the life you really want.Luckily, thereâs a way out. By understanding how clutter affects your life and taking action to declutter, you can finally escape and live a stress-free life.Letâs get started. The Science of How Clutter WorksIn 2012, researchers at the Yale School of Medicine discovered that the two parts of your brain associated with conflict and pain- the anterior cingulate cortex and insula- overreact whenever you try to let go of possessions that youâre emotionally connected to. [1]The stronger the emotional connection to the item, the more difficult it will be to let go becaus e itâs more painful.Thatâs not all. There are also two additional forces driving clutter and stress- the endowment effect and loss aversion. The endowment effect is our tendency to place higher value on items we own than on the identical items that we donât own.Loss aversion is our tendency to avoid the pain of loss, more so than the benefit of gaining. These forces interact with each other, driving you to acquire and keep clutter that causes stress and anxiety. The Link Between Clutter and StressâClutter is like a physical representation of a to-do listâ - Christina ScaliseClutter isnât just physical. It could also be mental, emotional, spiritual or digital.Any one or a combination of these could lead to high levels of stress and anxiety. This makes sense intuitively. The more clutter or possessions you have to deal with, the more overwhelmed you will feel due to the anticipated pain of loss. For example, a UCLA study of 32 families discovered that motherâs had elevated le vels of stress hormones whilst sorting out their possessions in their homes.Another study by the Princeton University Neuroscience Institute, discovered that individuals surrounded by physical clutter in a disorganized environment are less productive and more distracted than otherwise. These are a few examples of how clutter negatively affects your life.If you want to alleviate your stress and anxiety, the first step is live and work in a clutter-free environment.Hereâs howâ¦Feng Shui Your Way to a Stress-Free LifeâDiscarding is not the point; what matters is keeping those things that bring you joy. If you discard everything until you have nothing left but an empty house, I donât think youâll be happy living there. Our goal in tidying should be to create a living environment filled with the things we love.â ? Marie KondoFeng Shui is the Chinese philosophy of designing an environment for better well-being.Itâs the art of cutting out clutter from your life and only keeping the things that reflect who you really want to be.Here are some Feng Shui methods and other strategies to help you alleviate stress and anxiety from your life.1. Clean your Bedroom and Kitchen. There are several places you could begin to cut out the clutter. For example, if you have many tabs opened in your internet browser at any one time, you could cut this down to 3 tabs at most. The first two places to address stress would be your bedroom and kitchen.Aside from its cleanliness, the bedroom should also be free from electronic devices and equipments.Unused and worn out clothing and items in your closets could also be given away or donated to a charity.Similar rules also apply to the kitchen area. The general idea here is to let go of any items that donât reflect the internal state you aspire to have.If you want a s tate of mind that is healthy, clear and stable, your immediate environment should also reflect this too.2. Prevent incoming clutter.Iâd assume youâre a busy person with many responsibilities and a never-ending list of things to do.Clutter always seems to find its way into your life.Instead of waiting for the clutter to build up, why not prevent it from occurring in the first place? For example, if you own an iPhone, you could select the âDo Not Disturbâ mode whenever youâre working to prevent incoming calls. There are also settings that allow calls from specific people i.e. Immediate family, in case of emergency, whilst muting the rest of the callers. You could apply the same strategy to prevent mental clutter.Do you start your day filling your mind with positive, uplifting information or negative, discouraging messages? If the first thing you read when you wake up every morning is the general news on politics, wars and deaths, youâll most likely struggle with stress and an xiety throughout the day.If you regularly hang around people who are constantly stressed, dismissive and low in self-confidence, youâll start to pick up on their energy and mental thoughts as well. The clutter that fills your mind can be just as destructive as the clutter in your physical environment.3. Use the four box method. The four box method is a simple strategy that helps you to cut the clutter out from your life.Hereâs how it worksâ¦Step 1: Find 4 boxes and label them as follows- keep, sell/donate, store and trash.Step 2: Now work through your room, home or immediate physical environment and sort items into the various labelled boxes on this basis: Keep are items you use regularly and are aligned with who you want to be. Sell/Donate are items that you plan to sell or give away to your favorite charity. Store are items that you donât use regularly, but canât get rid of. These should be stored as much as you have available storage space. Trash includes unwanted or unused items that are too damaged to be donated or sold immediately. As useful as the four box method could be for you, the anticipated overwhelm from the work of sorting your clutter could cause procrastination. The best way to overcome this is to start small and block out short weekly sessions to declutter. For example, you could block out 20 minutes every Saturday morning at 11 a.m. for cleaning up your environment.Living a clutter-free life is a lifestyle, not a one time event.4. Get someone else to get rid of the clutterOne of the biggest challenges in getting rid of our clutter is the attachment we have to our items. It can be extremely difficult to hold an item you highly value, put in the trash and throw it away.Thereâs a psychological trick to overcome this- instead of cutting out the clutter by yourself, why not get someone else you trust to do this for you?You could write out a list or take pictures of items for your âtrashâ category and give them to someone else to sort this out and throw it away. This way you can minimize the pain fel t from the loss of your items.A Clutter-Free Life is a Stress-Free LifeYour body is always taking cues from your environment on how it should respond.Think about the last time you travelled on a holiday to a different country. You were more relaxed, less stressed out and anxious than back at home in your usual environment.Often, we think that itâs the sunny beach holidays that reduces our stress, but this isnât necessarily true.Itâs the fact that you moved to a more clutter-free environment, that explains why you feel less stressed out on holidays. You donât need to wait for a few weeks every year to experience this. You can cut the clutter from your life and live a stress-free life today.Mayo Oshin writes at MayoOshin.Com, where he shares the best practical ideas based on proven science and the habits of highly successful people for stress-free productivity and improved mental performance. To get these strategies to stop procrastinating, get more things by doing less and impr ove your focus, join his free weekly newsletter.âA version of this article originally appeared at mayooshin.com as âHow Clutter causes Stress and Anxiety (and What You Can Do About It).âFootnotes1. How to Get Work Experience During Your PhD Program -The Muse
How to Get Work Experience During Your PhD Program -The Muse How to Get Work Experience During Your PhD Program Everything you do as a graduate student is building toward that time when you finally go on the job market (kind of like when you were in college). And maybe youâre looking for options outside academia because youâve heard how tough landing a tenure-track job is. Or, maybe youâre not sure what type of career youâd like and want to see what else is out there. Thatâs why now is a perfect time to get some experience outside of academia. I know you might be thinking, Thatâs ridiculous. Between my research, course work, teaching, and the rest of my life, I donât have time for that! But consider this: I thought the same thing when I was wrapping up my graduate school program, and I ended up landing a role that lasted for a decade. Turns out, that was a much better move for me. And, I was able to make that choice because Iâd gotten some traditional work experience during my time in school. The truth is that you never know where youâll end up and whatâll ultimately interest you. I know, you think you found your thing, but just in case you havenât, getting a little bit of âtraditionalâ work experience can make all the difference. And the good news is that you donât need to run out and get a full-time job. You donât even need to get a part-time job. Below are ways to start getting some non-academic experience- from less-time intensive to most. Start a Blog Starting a blog can be very flexible, and you can control how much time and effort you invest in it. Perhaps you like baking bread and posting pictures of the results on Instagram, so you start a blog with tips on how to take professional food photos. In just one post, youâve already tried writing for a non-specialist audience, a skill youâll need outside of academia, believe me. (Read this for more blogging tips.) Take an Online Course The beauty of online courses is that you can fit them in around your crazy schedule. And you donât need to worry about grades! If youâve started that blog on professional food photos and you want to up your design game with a little HTML and CSS, you can learn to code without leaving your couch. (Read this for some great online class recommendations.) Volunteer This could be walking dogs at your local Humane Society, for example. Maybe that humane society also needs someone to write some marketing content for their website or take photos of a local event. Or, they need someone to help organize their volunteer database. Suddenly, youâre learning more than just how to keep a dog on a leash. Volunteering can be flexible and short-term, but that doesnât mean you canât make a contribution and grow your skills at the same time. Join a Committee or Offer to Lead One I was president of my departmentâs Graduate Student Organization, and in that role I learned tons about event planning- skills I used a lot in my first post-ac job. Helping set policy through an advisory board, helping your department decide who to admit to your program, or planning workshops on professional development give you leadership skills you can use in academia and outside it. Present to a Community Group Is a community group interested in your research? Or, maybe people love your Instagram bread photos and want to learn how to gain more followers for their own feeds. Giving a talk to a group outside of academia helps you hone your presentation and public speaking skills because you learn to think of new ways to communicate to different audiences. Create a Webinar or Email Class Do you know how to use data mining tools? Are you great at teaching other people how to use them? You could create a webinar or an email class to get your tips out there for people to use. If youâre interested in careers in creating or managing content, or youâre interested in being an entrepreneur, this is great way to get experience. Apply for an Internship No, internships arenât just for undergraduates- and yes, itâs possible to balance one with everything else you have going on. There are organizations that offer paid internships for PhD students, and some universities even provide funding for graduate students who do them. You may also be able to design your own internship and work with your department to get credit for it. Find a Part-Time or Full-Time Job A job can help you get hands-on experience very quickly while offering you a paycheck and, possibly, benefits. You might even find a fabulous post-academic career through part-time or full-time work. The tradeoff is the time commitment. I wrote most of my dissertation while working full-time, and it was challenging to balance both. Unless you need extra income to help cover your expenses, only take a full- or part-time role that helps build the skills you need to land that fabulous non-academic job. Getting non-academic experience while youâre still in a PhD program takes work and strong time management skills. Yes, youâll give up some very precious spare time. But imagine this: walking into your first post-ac job the week after you file your dissertation. Or, working with your first client in your new business. You can be successfully and happily employed post-PhD, and working on it now will help you find your next step more quickly.

8 Things to Keep in Mind When It#8217;s Time to Quit Your Job
8 Things to Keep in Mind When It#8217;s Time to Quit Your Job 8 Things to Keep in Mind When It#8217;s Time to Quit Your Job Welcome to Recruiter QA, where we pose employment-related questions to the experts and share their answers! Have a question youâd like to ask? Leave it in the comments, and you might just see it in the next installment of Recruiter QA! Todays Question: Sometimes, in order to advance in your career, youll need to quit a job in favor of a new one. Just because its necessary doesnt make it any less anxiety-inducing! How can people quit their jobs with as little stress as possible â" and without burning any bridges or harming their careers? 1. Tell Your Boss First Keep your resignation to yourself until after youve made it official. Nothing burns bridges faster than not adhering to protocol. While you may be overjoyed about your next opportunity and want to share it with your favorite coworkers, you do not want to risk it getting back to your boss or team and catching them off guard. Be patient and follow protocol. - Angelina Darrisaw, C-Suite Coach 2. Be Professional and Respectful Dont say anything negative. Thank your boss for the opportunity to work for the organization and for what they have taught you. Leave on good terms and dont burn any bridges. You will likely need them as a reference down the road. You may want to keep the boss as part of your network. - Stacy Pursell, The Pursell Group 3. Maintain Your Professionalism Outside of the Office, Too Professionalism extends to your discussions with others and your social media sites. Do not badmouth the company and its management staff. Doing this simply makes you look like a disgruntled employee. It can be a small world out there. You never know where your next job opportunity may come from in the future. Professionally speaking, its a wise move to keep your motives and reasons for quitting to yourself. - Heather Rothbauer-Wanish, Feather Communications 4. You Dont Need to Justify Your Decision Just rip the Band-Aid off. Dont beat around the bush or try to find the perfect thing to say. Dont try to over-explain or give unnecessary details. Simply express that you are giving your notice and offer a brief reason why (new job, moving, launching your own business, etc.). Be respectful, thank them for the experience, and stay positive and confident. Dont feel compelled to overshare. Part of what causes anxiety is that we feel well have to explain ourselves or justify our decisions. But there is no need. Youve made the decision youve made for the reasons youve made it, and those reasons arent anyone elses business. Everyone will be okay. Focus simply on the fact that youre giving notice, how much time youre giving, and how youll work to make it a smooth transition. Putting the focus on them and the business will help take the pressure off you. Once the Band-Aid is off, everyone will feel better! - Rebecca Vertucci, Vertucci Career Academy 5. Preserve the Relationship One of the principles of theater improvisation that we use in our work is: Its never about the thing. Its always about the relationship. There are lots of reasons people quit: new opportunities, hating the boss, changing home or health, pay, not liking the work. There are lots. Whatever the reason for leaving your job, thats not the real topic of conversation with your supervisor when you tell them youre leaving. Thats not whats at stake. Whats at stake is the relationship. Make the conversation about them. Help them feel as good as possible about the move. Dont be fake or untruthful. Do express gratitude. Whatever else may be true about your time there, you had a paycheck and an opportunity to make a contribution. When I left a job because I couldnt stand being demeaned by my boss every day, heres what I truthfully said when I told her I was going: Ive decided to move on. We both know neither one of us has been satisfied with the way things are going. I truly appreciate the opportunity to serve your customers for as long as I have. Theyre great. Ill miss them. Its a great product youre giving them. I know youll keep that up. I wish you the best. Relationship preserved, and I got what I needed â" out. - Aaron Schmookler, The Yes Works 6. Strike a Power Pose First, relax. Life will go on for both of you. Second, before going in to give notice, power pose. Get your confidence biologically boosted by doing the Superman in a bathroom stall for 3-5 minutes. Watch Amy Cuddys TED Talk for more info. - Danny Zoucha, DannyZoucha.com 7. Help the Company Wrap Up Your Projects Offer to be available for questions and tying up loose ends even after youve left. This doesnt mean you should volunteer to work extra hours working for a company you no longer work for, but if you can help in small ways and get things wrapped up neatly, your ex-boss will really appreciate the effort. - Geoff Scott, Resume Companion 8. Stay Committed to the End Give your job 100 percent â" no more, no less. After announcing your resignation, avoid the temptation to mentally check out. People will notice how you behave when you no longer have any skin in the game, and this often ends up becoming your lasting legacy. Treat your job seriously and stay focused on delivering results all the way until the very last day. - Joseph Liu, Career Consultant and Host of Career Relaunch
